Tips for Designing a Functional Mud Room

  • hang hooks low so children are more likely to hang up their own coats
  • add an element to tie the outdoors with indoors, such as similar mats, seating or trim paint color
  • use some similar style elements such as baseboards and trim to tie your mud room into the rest of the house
  • an open locker system with a compartment for each family member is ideal
  • try to incorporate bench seating as an element of the open locker system with cubbies below a seat
  • a mud room can work well as a shared laundry room
  • a mudroom is a good place for a docking station for charging cell phones, iPods, tablets and computers
  • a bulletin board and peg rack and key rack on the wall facing the open locker system storage adds a lot of extra storage
  • store off-season items in baskets at the tops of the storage lockers in out-of-reach spaces
  • use a rubber runner along the wall facing the storage lockers for just-worn footwear, and store other footwear in cubbies below the seating
  • homes for small families may only require a chair or bench and small area with hooks and shelf storage
  • a mud room can be a great place to feed the family pets and store their food, especially if its combined with a washer and dryer and laundry sink for easy water access
  • a pet sleeping area can also be accommodated in a mud room
  • a mud room can be a good place to incorporate a small printing station for the family if you don’t have an office; now that desktops are less common, one printer will usually suffice for an entire family
  • consider accommodating extra required pantry storage into your mud room
  • the nook under a stairwell can serve as a great mud room space in a basement entry
  • wall space at the entry from the garage is another great space to use for mud room space if you don’t have a separate space you can use
