I am just starting to look at dining room rugs for my home. I’ve lived without one for a year now, and find the table slides around a bit on my hardwood, even though its a heavy solid wood table. I also want to define the space a bit in my open concept area. My taste leans toward a big bold modern print of some sort. However, I have a nearby chair in a bold modern circular print, so I may go a bit understated on the rug. Most of my furniture is simple and neutral so I can inject trendy splashes of colour in my rugs and accessories, which people tire of after time.
For a standard size table, seating 4-6 people and approximately 42″ X 64″, the size of the rug should be 8′ X 10′. Somewhere between 6′ X 9′ and 9′ X 12′ should do the trick. The idea is to have about 2′ on each size so the chair legs will still be on the rug when pulled out. A rug pad can reduce on wear and tear and protect floors, and even make it easier to vacuum.
