Kitchen Lighting Trends for 2014

When building my house I learned a lot about lighting trends, paying particular care to kitchen lighting, because it is definitely a room you want plenty of light in.  There are three main types we need to consider:

  1. Ambient lighting – the overhead lighting meant for general lighting.  I installed pot lights every few feet around the perimeter of my cabinets for this purpose.  If you want to install pot lights in an existing ceiling, see the video at the end of this article.
  2. Accent lighting – to highlight features in the room.  I added lighting to my glass windowed upper cabinets and filled them with pretty things.  It looks beautiful at night with just those lights on in the kitchen.  If you don’t have glass windows on your upper cabinet, overhead cabinet lighting is also pretty.
  3. Task Lighting – such as pendants over an island, or under the counter lights when we are working at the counter.  If you have ever washed dishes or chopped vegetables with a sharp knife in a poorly lit kitchen, you’ll know how frustrating it is to not have enough light.  I installed two good strong pendant lights over my island, and have excellent lighting in my range hood.  I thought with all the lighting I had, I wouldn’t need under the cabinet lighting, and yet that is my one regret about the kitchen design – we can never have too much lighting!

Some of the current kitchen lighting trends are shown below – click pictures for details.

  • Oversized pendants for over the dining table, or pair them up over the kitchen island
